it's a tough monday morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. those niners put up a good fight in the second half but in the end it just wasn't enough and fans spilled out of bars all across the city. very disappointed. one of the hot spots in the past has been the mission district. especially after the giants won the world series. this business across the street sketchers was hit hard. windows were covered in graffiti. same story with the business across the street. this time much calmer. san francisco police are telling us that 25 people were arrested. mostly for public intoxication. one person was arrested after they tried to light something on fire over near 16th and mission. near 24th street a few people threw bottles at police officers. that was contained quickly and fortunately there no one was hurt. part of mission and also 24th streets were closed down to eliminate cruising after and during the game. some fans thought it was heavy handed but most spilling out of
6:01 am
bars after that loss to the ravens, they understood. >> it's all right. as long as there's no trouble and they're here to keep everything safe, it's okay. >> reporter: now early this morning street sweepers and power washers cleaned up the streets and sidewalks in the mission district. 25 people arrested number is preliminary. it may go up later this morning when they check numbers again. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." thanks, christie. no doubt a very tough loss all of the way around for the 49ers down in new orleans. >> but now we're getting perspective from one of nfl's hardest hitters ever. rodney appeared if four of the 49ers super bowl wins. 1982, '85, '89 and '90 and this year he appeared in a super bowl ad alongside joe montana. >> joe montana. >> here you go, joe.
6:02 am
>> always got my back. >> awesome. got to love that. now only right here on nbc bay area our pressure to welcome in ronnie lott joining us by phone bright and early this morning. good morning. >> good morning. >> a tough one to watch last night. something you never experienced. a super bowl loss. where did you watch the game and how do you think the 49ers looked? >> well, i was watching the game at larry's home in palm springs and i was with the folks at oracle and we were all sitting there rooting and chanting and doing everything that we could. it was amazing. it was one of those games where you are sitting there thinking in the first half, wow, they just got to calm down. they got to calm down. then you go from first half to the second half and like the last two playoff games, you realize that they're going to come back. you see they're coming back.
6:03 am
and then all of a sudden right there at the end you look at the play and you go, i can't believe the referee didn't call holding on that play. i have been in situations like that as a defensive back and i assumed right away that the referee was going to call holding. i remember playing against washington in 1983 doing the same thing. they called a flag on me. i thought that right there especially in that moment that they were going to call a flag and to me that was the most disappointing play looking at that play and seeing that play over and over and over, the referee should have called a flag or should have pulled the flag on that play. >> that's what everybody is talking about this morning. >> to hear from ronnie, it legitimizes it. >> what do you think of the
6:04 am
decision to start kaepernick halfway through the season? >> to me, this young man has played phenomenal football and the decision that they made, a lot of people at the time didn't think it was the right decision. i was one of those guys because of the tradition of just going through that art of making the change and it was the right decision. and then on top of that, you look at what he was able to do. you look at the courage that he had and what he demonstrated in coming back and to me this young man played a phenomenal football game. there were some throws he made that i don't even know if joe or steve or any quarterback could have made in that game. and so there was just a phenomenal effort from his part of putting this team on his back, of really finding energy and fortitude which when you
6:05 am
have a team, especially when you are playing from behind, you guys know this, it is one of the most difficult things especially playing against the ravens defense with ray lewis and all those guys and ed reed and to me it said a lot about this young man. we've got a great future ahead of ourselves especially with someone like that leading the charge. >> kaepernick, the kid was phenomenal. high praise from mr. lott. the nfl has changed its stance on hard hits. president obama weighing in saying there are concerns right now about letting children play the sport. you started when you were very young man. you started playing when you were 9 years old. question is, considering some of the suicides and brain damage of former nfl players out there, where do you stand on this issue now? >> jon, i agree with the president. i think that what he said is that, look, we have to find ways to enhance this game and find
6:06 am
ways to improve this game. we have to look at areas we can protect young people. for me i'm right with him. i think i'm part of this safety committee. john madden is the chairman of the safety committee. he's constantly trying to talk about ways that we can enhance the game. obviously we're trying to change hitting. we have to encourage young people in the youth leagues to change hitting. i think the other thing that we have to do especially in the youth area, we have to require kids to have new helmets every year and unfortunately when you think about that, that's a big cost. i think if we had the nfl subsidizing that cost and had the nfl involved in that cost and so all of a sudden kids are playing with new helmets every year and the equipment was being enhanced every year and you take along the fact that now kids are being educated, so if they do have a concussion that it is

better to come off the field. you might lose your job. you might go through that, but this is about the safety of your welfare. this is about the safety of taking care of yourself and to me just knowing the relationship that i have with junior seau. he was a tremendous person. my heart breaks for his family and it was a tough situation for all of us to go through. so we still don't know why and there are other things that we need to still understand about these injuries and so for me i think that we're going the right direction. i just salute president obama as well as the commissioner goodell to take the stances that they are taking. we need to do this especially given how many people love this game and i know my mom -- i had
6:08 am
a chance to see her yesterday and we went to church together and spent some time. of course when you are with your mom and dad and you're talking about football, we had to go all of the way back to when i was 10 years old starting there and you know that all those feelings come out and i'll be the first one to tell you, my mom would agree with president obama. she would say, yes, he's doing the right thing. he's asking all of us to take the right stance. >> all right. ronnie lott, got to always listen to your mama, don't you? >> on super bowl sunday, that's the best place to be. >> that's right. >> all right. thanks so much for joining us. >> thank you very much. what a class act. always a pleasure. great perperspective. >> and a talent. >> pleasure to have him. 6:10 right now. christina loren, what's happening outside weatherwise? >> nothing as good as that
